OK my art friends, we're home for a few weeks. You might be thinking, how can I make art if I'm not in my wonderful school studio? Well, fear not. Your crack team of art educators here at the Art of South B is hard at work, putting together a list of ways you can art at home using stuff you probably already have in your house! Take a look at the project ideas below. There are even more ideas listed on our Pinterest board, Art at Home. Be inspired, create art and then post what you create to Seesaw or Sutori. It will be exciting to share what everyone did when we return. For even more inspiration, check out the Art Portal!
Just a quick post to showcase some of the stuff and things happening at South B. Above, Josh created this multi-cut stencil work of his teacher's dog. This is the first in a series of cakes that represent Ellea's past, present and future life. The first in the series is this oil painting of a birthday cake for a one year old. The next painting, which she is currently working on, is of her upcoming graduation cake. The final painting in the series will be a wedding cake. All three paintings will have similar objects (flowers) and share a common color scheme. We presented a unit on how artists often use text in their work. This unit inspired Laura to create this stencil, spray painting of the text from her home state. One of the Nine units covered in Art One is the Object. This student decided to create an egg using pastels. The first egg came out so good that he decided to create a whole flock of eggs. In another unit, we talked about how artists often use scale when create works of art. That inspired Macayla to create this giant, M&M cookie complete with box. In Computer Art, we learned a little about Photo manipulation. Using her newly acquired skill set, Autumn created this Newimal. Another work inspired by the Text unit. Often, as art teachers, we present projects that we know will be successful. However, that should never replace the need to experiment, play, take risk, and just straight up see what might happens when you do. Ink, between melted crayon, on glass. We'll see... We just started a new semester here at the Art of South B and a new semester means new classes. This semester we started our second year of Computer Art and Animation. For this first week, we learned a few things about Photoshop then spread our digital wings by trying to create a Newimal. Take a look! South Brunswick High School Art
This is the last week of the semester. When we return from break, we will stat a new semester with new classes and new artists. So here is a look at a few of the projects that are sneaking in at the last minute and wrapping up the semester. This piece is one of the Redo projects. The original piece was a painting of a flower. For her Redo, she decided to try her hand at site specific perspective. The images are painting different sizes which are placed at different distances from each other. You can only see the entire image if you look at it from one specific location. These are so fun! Who doesn't like a cardboard wrapped yarn dinosaur! not only did she make a bunch, she also taught several other students how to make them. This fully functional bag was created from cut paper. Unfortunately, I only captured these poor quality photos before she took it home. These photos don't do it justice.
That's a wrap! See you next semester! When Cymya ask me for the spray paint after this portrait was done I was a little concerned. However, she did a great job masking off the painting with tape and paper. When Zach (who sat in on class) asked for a drawing lesson, M2 showed him how she goes about drawing portraits. It's great when the student become the teacher. Especially to a kid who isn't even in art class ;) When Dion first created a stencil, it was a single image. After he made the first one, he played with the stencil, creating this multi imaged work. Play is an important part of the art making process. When a student asks for a needle and thread... When a student asks if she can bring her skateboard to school so she can paint it. When a student totally redesigns a pair of shoes including painting them black. When you have some newspaper, cardboard and paper mache' on the table. South Brunswick High School Art Southport, NC

#HandTurkeyTuesday, that most special time right before Thanksgiving break. There is a buzz in the air, not because we are about to have a few days off to spend with our relatives while eating turkey and watching football... No! It's because everyone wants to draw a hand turkey. Have you never participated in #HandTurkeyTuesday? Well, then you might consider it for next year. We even put together a complete presentation that goes into depth about what #HandTurkeyTuesday is all about. Or, at least, it has some examples of hand turkeys. But you don't need to go to the presentation to see the best examples of hand turkeys. We have them right here! I present to you the 2019 #HandTurkeyTuesday hand turkeys!!!! For this week's unit, we talked about zines. what's a zine you ask? well, its a self published, subversive body of work, created by art students. Anyone wishing to take part simply had to enter a work, be it drawing, collage, or poetry. Our fist Zine, Volume 1, Issue 1, is titled 280. Now, that is subversive. A few of the pages are posted below but you can pick up a copy around the school. People are already gearing up to enter work in issue 2. See you next month! Table: Ugly DollsEach week, we present a Table project. these temporary centers are up for a week. Student's have the option to participate or not. However, this week's Table, ugly dolls, has been exceptionally well received. Even though many didn't know how to sew, everyone was excited about giving it a go. We are only on day one so check back soon for some of the final pieces. The Apple Challenge! This week, we challenged students with upping their skills with the Apple Challenge. It was rather simple as the student only had to draw three apples. Here's how it works.. Step One: Draw an appleStep Two: Pick out as many colors as you see in this imageStep three: Draw apple again, use those colorOther Happenings |
