The Nine
Even though there are endless themes an artists might explore, there is a finite amount of subjects the artist can select from in which to interpret these themes. The subject of a student’s art represents what they will visually produce. For example, a student presented with the theme ‘play’ may decide to draw a tire swing. The subject in this example, the tire swing, is an object. When we look at it from this point of view we may conclude that there are also an infinite amount of subjects. However, this is not the case. In fact, the subjects that an artist can choose from can be broken down to nine basic subjects. We call these subjects The Nine.
The Nine:
The Object, Architecture, Landscape, Nature, The Portrait, The Figure, Imagination, Non Representational, Conceptual
Presenting the Nine as class themes is an excellent way to work through a great deal of breadth in an art program. The Nine is also an excellent method for introducing choice-based teaching to a class that has little or no experience with a choice-based classroom.
Each of the Nine can be presented as a unit. Each unit may consist of several key parts. First, the teacher may select to present techniques that align well with the unit’s theme. Second, the teacher may select to introduce different media as she introduces each theme or the teacher may elect to present a good deal of media upfront, before the units are introduced. Third, the teacher may select to expose the students to various artists that have explored the theme in order to continue to inspire her students.
