For our last project of the 15/16 school year, we decided to create some interactive murals for the courtyard. First we created our designs on paper. Next, we moved into the courtyard to fill in color. We were on and off a few days due to a few rain drops (all my students are made of sugar and would melt if they went out in the drizzle, but luckily the rain it didn't affect the murals).
Here is a look at some of the finished murals... Here at The Art of South Brunswick High School, NC, we incorporate the Teaching for Artistic Behavior or TAB philosophy in our classroom. TAB states that the student is the artist and the art room is their studio. We believe students should be involved in the entire artistic process including designing, creating, and reflecting on their work. It is our job as teachers to present ideas and concepts, demonstrate techniques and materials, and encourage and support our students to create and produce works of art at the highest level.

These are on the outside walls of the school which face our courtyard. The walls are brick so we used a combination of sidewalk chalk (to block in large areas of color) and chalk pastels ( for details).

Greetings! I am a Middle School art teacher from Ohio. I think this is AWESOME! Is there any way you could pass along any materials you used to teach this, such as a Slideshow or Rubric? I would love to give this a shot!

Sure, I have a slideshow I presented before we started. It shows different types of interactive art other artists have created. I think this link should work -->. https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1J2aH2xxEh5YpEoIuX5aiU0CU39tR9mqaA0yv47be6G8

You said in the slide show "With great power...." I assume this is common language in your school that describes positive behavior. Where it from and what does it mean??

"with great power comes great responsibility" is from Spider-Man. There is a lot of freedom working in the courtyard. I ask that they keep three things in mind.

Interesting project. Could you explain your cleanup procedure? How/who cleaned the chalk of the brick walls?
